The Brains – The Monster Within

Montreal psychobilly band ‘The Brains’ have announced the release of a brand new full-length titled “The Monster Within”

Worms writhing inside your brain cause dizziness – and Canada’s psychobilly horror-punks will certainly have those little monsters squirming inside your cramped cranium for days to come, especially if you listen to their crack-pot full-length new release titled “The Monster Within”.

Brains_01We listened, and here’s what we thought:

The title track hurtles in like a goggle eyed monstrous crash-test dummy riding on a three wheeled skateboard.  The chorus is glorious, full of gold and metal clinking sound structures and a chubby rhythm that will keep your eyes bulging and your cheeks swollen.

Give It All’ has more or less the same pace and structure,  but then ‘Misery’ shakes her hips and starts grinding her pelvis into the back of the chair. You will not be able to stop your feet shuffling to the upbeat chorus and the flapping guitars. High excitation and full of joy.

The Damned’ has a hellish beat and a jazzy “I Wan’na Be Like You” melody.   The harmonies are magnificent and the rhythm will vibrate your curly toes and put bubbles in your tube.

Then ‘Bleed’ rat-a-tats in like a flapper in a fix.  The horror-vaudeville shtick lyrics are so gooey that they will adhere to the soles of your brothel creepers like gobs of Bazooka Joe.

Stay Back’ has a metal skin. The vocals are dirty-brown and easy-to-mouth, and the oily bass is like a strapping stripper lazily performing in the centre of the room.  The infectious chorus will find you and smoke you out. So beware!

Electrik Shock’ is the most punkish track on offer – and the Bolshevik ending is strangely addictive. Renè’s vocals on ‘Rest In Pieces’  (nice pun) reminded us of Elvis Costello in structure and style.

Kill Kill’ sounds like a flamenco night that has gone badly wrong. The Mariachi saw his Guitarron blown away in the wind, and the rhythm patterns have turned into a whirlwind of dramatic emotional torment. ‘Suffering And Pain’ keeps up the relentless pace, and the inky vocals rumble out and fall onto the ripely zany guitar-work.  The rock ‘n’ roll majesty of this song is something to admire and cherish. Superb!

The 14 track album is completed with the country & western sounding gallop race that is ‘Rolling Down’.  This lolloping minstrel song is full of warmth and nostalgic charm.   “On with the show…”  Whoa! Neddy!
