Ummagma Lama (Ian Baird Remix)

Ummagma is a Ukrainian-Canadian duo –  comprising of Alexx Kretov and Shauna McLarnon. They serve up a generous scoop of positive music laced with a richly layered soundscape, and sublime resonance.

Having simultaneously released 2 debut albums ‘Antigravity’ and ‘Ummagma’ in July 2012, Ummagma have big things in the pipeline for 2013.

The recent remixes of ‘Lama’ by Ian Baird (A*Star, Spring Clock Wonder, remixer of SPC ECO) and also by Jane Woodman are teasers for an upcoming international remix competition that Ummagma will be spearheading.

This will involve 80 partners (magazines/blogs/radio stations/record labels/DJ collectives) from 24 countries. A physical extended release of both debut albums is also on the cards, as is some vinyl and several joint releases with some very exciting people.

Ummagma shortOn April 1, Ummagma will release their fresh remix of ‘Lama’ by Ian Baird.

This is the latest contribution to the Fund for Danny Lackey, a charitable initiative created in memory of Danny Lackey, the co-founder of the When the Sun Hits blog and a leader in the shoegaze community, who recently lost his battle with cancer. This remix will be available for streaming and purchase on the Fund’s Bandcamp   and will be streamable on Soundcloud.

We had an early listen to Ummagma’s Lama (Ian Baird Remix), and here’s what we thought:

An insistent beat is like a barn door banging in the wind. Heavier bass notes drip sensually down the blinds, and the voices are like patches of red berry juice against your chin. Other sounds wiggle and interlope, and they always travel a-pace,  as if they were sitting astride a clockwork train. Occasional gloopy stops and tender yawning gaps are filled by the slightly flowery vocals that seem to flitter and fly free. It’s a honeyed confetti of a song. Misty and melancholy.
