Section 60 – Welcome to the Dream Factory

Section 60 ( Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 ) increased the police powers in the UK to perform unsupervised “stop and searches” on rogues and ne’er-do-wells.

It was specifically drafted to suppress the activities of some ‘unwelcome’ alternative groups: Squatters, direct action protesters, football fans, hunt saboteurs etc. In particular, it was prepared to nip-in-the-bud the new craze of holding “Raves” on waste ground and in empty buildings. The legislation was harshly criticized – not only by the groups mentioned above – but also by level-headed critics who believed that the law was hastily authorized, poorly written, and tended to arbitrarily criminalize a part of the community that might well be thought of as “alternative” – but were no danger to society.

The Act famously defined music to be: “Sounds wholly or predominantly characterised by the emission of a succession of repetitive beats.” The Act was amended by The Crime and Disorder Act 1998.

Section 60 shortWelcome to the Dream Factory,’ is the latest EP from Sheffield’s ‘Section 60′ – a title conjured up from the mundane existence within the confines of factory work, a glimpse, perhaps, into the frustrated psyche that surrounds their sound and lyrics.

The trappings of Northern lads culture – parkas, big haircuts, a blustering presence – might all seem somewhat stereotypical …but for SECTION 60 these things are a way of life.

Section 60 might be rough, raw and edgy. But they are also skilled originals – with a talent for creating captivating indie-rock anthems and emotive ballads.

We listened to new video ‘Welcome to the Dream Factory’. Here’s what we thought:

The guitars are smeared like grease across a pair of stained canvas overalls.

With a riff that’s definitely very reminiscent of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and an approach that is almost certainly Oasis-based, the song has a low-bouncing bass-line that plays tricks – running around an insistent chorus and a cracking-good verse line.

This will go down very well in pubs and stadiums.  As well as clubs. Good innit?
