Vuvuvultures Arty Party

On 19th April the enigmatic Vuvuvultures returned with their blend of atmospheric jagged pop-noir to release their first of four 7” AA sided singles for 2014. The first of these releases will be ‘Arty Party’ and ‘Song Bot’.

Their darkly twisted pop is menacing and sultry; it brims with a brooding intensity that is marking them as formidable live draw. Their shows are frequently packed out with a fevered energy which feeds off of the compelling presence of front woman Harmony Boucher, the scythe like guitars of Paul Ressel and the taut and unfaltering rhythm section of Nicole Bettencourt Coelho and Matt Christensen.

vuvuvultures shortWe listened to Arty Party:

This starts out like an urban gritter crunching across a gravel driveway – then some bass notes pogo around the popcorn shuffles – before the lower-end beats begin a rubbery life of their own.

The guitars judder just like deely-boppers – and the vocals sneer away. These are tidily encompassed by the the fairground rhythms that scream and giggle like an emaciated group of delighted cheerleaders swinging their bare-legs on the Chair-O-Planes.

Then a mis-cast alien lead guitar elbows itself into place like a rude foreigner – and pushes his way toward the front. This signals the abrupt conclusion.

It would be almost impossible not to push RE-PLAY immediately. And have another go…
