Imperial Mammoth is a collaboration between LA’s husband ‘n’ wife duo Leonard Jackson (previously with rockers The Forward) and singer-harpist-keyboardist Laura Jane Scott.
We have been listening to their “Gold Confetti” Album (out June 24th). Here’s what we think:
‘Little Earthquakes’ has a transitory quality – like looking at life through a shaky veil. But the pace is strong and we were happily squeezed by the low notes.
The vocals will enchant and entrance you. They are frosted and crystallized. They squeak and glow…
With small blades of syrup here and there. And the melody is lovely too!
‘The Limitless Hours’ is a little faster. With fragments of sound and flutter that seem to flip through a bowl of nebulous shimmerings.
The vocals on this track are smooth as vanilla-butter and spread out gently – but they also contain an enriched sense of excitement and a secret sense of loss and piety.
‘The Last One To Leave The Party’ begins with a trembling harp-sound and a milk-bottle beat.
The voice bravely steps forward, but you sense the shyness too. Then the song itself spreads out and feels more at home.
This track becomes a hugely comforting duvet … a soft blanket of half remembered memories.
This is delicious stuff!
