With lyrics by their vocalist Marc LaBelle, the new song by L.A. hard rockers DIRTY HONEY titled “Won’t Take Me Alive,” establishes a boundary between potential negative effects of disciplined thought on one side and morality and autonomy on the other.
Lyrically, LaBelle was inspired by the courage & determination displayed by Ukrainians today as well as by a chat he had with a stranger he met at the Berlin Wall. The man could relate to people who were compelled to live under autocratic regimes because he was a product of Cold War Germany. The song is a straight-up, toe-crushing, fireball rocker.

Written & directed by cinematographer George Gallardo Kattah (Mike Posner: I’m Not Dead Yet, 2022, Upsahl: People I Don’t Like, 2020), the main character of the video is Ava, a student at a private school who is informed by Helga, the headmistress, that she must follow rules, wear required attire, refrain from getting her tongue pierced, and desist from listening to rock.
Ava, however, is resolute; she refuses to give up and instead keeps tearing down the barriers of conformity that are crucial to defining who she is and will be for the rest of her life. She finds consolation in her attic bedroom, where she can play and listen to the music that helps her free herself of anger. Every day she attends school is recorded on a chalkboard as if she’d spent the day in jail. Like many of us, Ava is frantically searching for an exit.
“This song made me feel like a teenager, and we had lots of fun channeling our frustrations from back in the day by doing this video,” said Gallardo. “Bringing Ava and Helga to life was quite a process and a highlight of this year so far.”
