MILE ME DEAF Brando Review

Viennese musician Wolfgang Möstl comes from ‘Killed by 9V Batteries’ – the Austrian indie rock band – founded in 2002 – and best known for their 2011 album ‘The Crux’.

Their singer / guitarist and ‘lead creative’ – Möstl – then went on to play guitar with ‘The Sex Jams’ and also continued to play with his own cryptic experimental pop experiment ‘Mile Me Deaf’.

Although not strictly a band (‘Mile Me Deaf’ is Möstl’s collection of cool friends) they have, nevertheless,  started to tour as a unified project and have already released quality recordings such as ‘Wild at Heart’. This has a solid melodic rock foundation and is fuzzy and infectious, with a lo-fi atmosphere. This song has a dreamy nature,  and it contains the kind of richly layered moody packaging that is reminiscent of Beach House.

Möstl and ‘Mile Me Deaf’ release a new EP “BRANDO” in June. The EP features a grinning Leonard Nimoy look-alike on the cover and emphasizes the musical versatility of ‘the Mile Me Deaf’ club.

Mile Me Deaf smallThe five tracks on the recording will charm indie-hungry hearts and lovers of catchy melodies wrapped within bizarre soundscapes.

We listened to the title track ‘BRANDO’.  Here’s what we thought:

‘Brando’ is the perfect track for a summer day. You can feel the shingle between your toes. And the smell of salt air,  ripe in your nostrils.

The sounds form a grid of sparkling icicle beats, jauntily relaxed rhythms and crisp aromas of vanilla wafers and chocolate flakes. These are surrounded by a lightly strummed guitar.

The lead solo is eccentric, organic, and unreasonably elastic. But the sweet Lennon-esque vocals … with their gentle pastel-coloured attitudes and crystalline tones…. will allow you to sprawl within their softness.

Everything is smooth and efficiently pastiched – without descending to the kitsch. The insistent chorus is slightly wobbly – and almost motherly in attitude – which reminds us of the early work by Lou Reed.
