Ahead of their headline London show at The Garage on 6th December, Blueneck have revealed their latest slice of melodic melancholy in the form of new single ‘Sirens.’
Bristol (UK) based Blueneck have previously toured with Cult of Luna and have released cuts on the cult experimental label Denovali. Known for the distinctive haunting vocals of main-man Duncan Attwood – the band also comprises of Ben Paget, Chris Copsey, Richard Sadler, Wilf Swann, Tim Leesam. They admit to influences and inspirations from producers/arrangers like innovator Brian Eno, synthesizer band AIR and screen music composer John Carpenter.
We listened to Sirens – here’s what we thought:
The soft lines of this song remind us of waving, nodding grain lines in a shaded field. The rows sway gently – sometimes they cringe – in a constant trembling movement. A Chiffchaff darts here and there. Hunting for gnats. The bird-song is clear and repetitive.
Attwood’s extraordinarily pure voice (reminiscent of Thom Yorke – though even higher and thinner) shines steadily across a lattice-work of membranous sound. It’s like looking at the world through the diaphanous glass of a dragonfly wing.
Almost imperceptibly – the rhythms start to fluster against a depressed and ponderously desolate piano. A drum-sound starts puffing and pulling – like a prisoner tugging at chains. Then the foundation stones of a finale begin to form.
The piece builds into a magnificent triumphal arch – an architectural dome of unblemished sounds and honorific textures.
The song dissolves, though, into a chilling night-scene. Then the Chiffchaff is no more.
