Volcanoes When We Melodise

Volcanoes – consisting of Sam, Kev, Boa and Chris – dwell in the musical ether somewhere between Leeds and Sheffield (UK), wiggling their toes into both scenes and sprinkling in some fairy dust of their own.

volcanoes shortVolcanoes have two singer/songwriters each with short attentions, huge imaginations and completely different musical tastes. So it’s no wonder the band can’t be pigeon-holed, comparing them to other bands is fruitless, they’re different on every song.

Now the four-piece have issued a new single When We Melodise. It is carefully crafted but sounds neither controlled nor regulated.  We had a listen:

This piece has a slightly de-tuned wonkiness, as if sugar-strands have been plucked out of an empty sky – but it’s also an extraordinary series of small steps and gut-wire captures –  and these set the tone for the rest of the song structure.

The mildly oriental sounding-board for this piece  is the vocal inter-play – it is superbly generous.

The vocals arrange themselves around the fragile and tense percussive influences – dripping their opal fragrances into a rich pool of fascinating moments.
