Volcanoes – consisting of Sam, Kev, Boa and Chris – dwell in the musical ether somewhere between Leeds and Sheffield (UK), wiggling their toes into both scenes and sprinkling in some fairy dust of their own.
Volcanoes have two singer/songwriters each with short attentions, huge imaginations and completely different musical tastes. So it’s no wonder the band can’t be pigeon-holed, comparing them to other bands is fruitless, they’re different on every song.
Now the four-piece have issued a new single When We Melodise. It is carefully crafted but sounds neither controlled nor regulated. We had a listen:
This piece has a slightly de-tuned wonkiness, as if sugar-strands have been plucked out of an empty sky – but it’s also an extraordinary series of small steps and gut-wire captures – and these set the tone for the rest of the song structure.
The mildly oriental sounding-board for this piece is the vocal inter-play – it is superbly generous.
The vocals arrange themselves around the fragile and tense percussive influences – dripping their opal fragrances into a rich pool of fascinating moments.
