When the Kaiser Chiefs’ main songwriter Nick Hodgson amicably ‘moved on’ from the band he loved so deeply in the latter part of 2012 – to help create Albert Albert – you could almost hear the palpable nation-wide puzzlement and the anxious scratching of heads. But the new project – with Anna Goodall, Juanita Stein (Howling Bells), Tom Greatorex and Danny Prescott (both ex-Black Wire) is a grand affair – not a folly – a truly great move for all involved.
Imagine a generous set of guitar strings that loosely jangle and twang together – and exceptionally light sweet harmony singing that meets at melodic intersections created by those skilled instrumentals – and you get close to the Byrds meets The Hollies sounds created by this talented quintet.
Beat-pop, psychedelic pop and soft rock – it’s all here, in the grainy world of Albert Albert.
Yes it’s slightly dark, almost always groovy, but it feels like it’s totally essential.
