After releasing their first album way-back in 1997 – the Norwegian Indie Power-Rockers BEEZEWAX ended up on their first UK tour.
Still very young, and feeling kinda out of place in the UK punk and hard core scene with their Dinosaur Jr. meets Buffalo Tom via Hüsker Dü style pop – they managed to thrive – soon the scene became their home away from home. A scene where they earned the nicknames “the Norwegian drinking machine”, and “the Norwegian kings of emo”.
Fast forward to 2012 the band somehow found themselves together in studio again with the main objective of making a record that sounds both great and fun. Doing stuff the fun way, not the correct way. With the philosophy of making it sound like one of the many cassette tapes that were stuffed with their musical heroes in their youth.
What you’ve got is classic Beezewax. Highly energetic songs that take a dive into early heroes – but filtered through fun filled filters of contemporary artists like Phoenix and Peter Björn and John.
The album is produced by lead singer Kenneth Ishak in his studio in Oslo, with mixing help from Jorge Elbrecht (Ariel Pink, Violens) in New York.
We listened to the single taken from the album: ‘Everyone Will Tear You Down’ :
This chuckles along at a rattling pace.
A soft voice is smudged-out softly against an instrumental backing that’s in full bloom.
The piece quickly grows … creating a huge space full of jets, low-down strums and hums.
The verse is passionate and the singalong chorus is filled with diabolical skill and devilish dexterity.
Terrfic. And joy-ridden.
