Is There a Bright Side to Little Earthquakes?

Little Earthquake is the brainchild of brothers Matthew and Justin Hyland, students and fans of indie pop, rock, who bring their electronic and acoustic instruments together – to bring quirky melodies to life.

Based in the Central Coast of Australia, the brothers grew up in bands together at school before heading to America, where they toured as members of the U.S. indie rockers Lydia, criss-crossing the country and getting a taste for life on the road.

It was while they were winding their way across those American highways that the brothers began writing together for a new project, creating songs that would go on to become the basis for Little Earthquake.

Returning to Australia in 2013, the brothers teamed up with producer Lachlan Mitchell (The Jezabels, Pnau) who took their songs to a new level, creating the basis of their EP.

Little Earthquake Bright Side tourWe have been listening to the lead single from the EP “Brightside”:

Bright Side rushes straight in with – what sounds like – an impatient demand for your attention.

Yet the anguished voices suggest that things are not as bright as they could be.

And the desire to look at the bright side is an act of self-preservation…

The pronking beat overlaps with the swaying motion of succulent keys – these agitate and boil – during the barrel time of the song – then the finale rolls out in dandy fashion.

This causes the whole thing to go on spinning in your head … long after the first listen.

You are left with a deep-seated feeling of optimism. Sweet and easy –  and a desire to go on looking on the bright side
