Kobadelta Remain Distracted

Newcastle (UK)  based Kobadelta play dark and brooding indie-psych-rock.

Their new ‘Remain Distracted’ EP is released later this month.

Kobadelta guitarist Alex Malliris told us:

“We feel that [this] EP is the best representation yet of what we consider to be Kobadelta’s ‘sound’…  After experimenting with a range of ideas on our last few releases.”

“It comes on the back of what has been a great year for us so far, being chosen to play Newcastle’s Evolution Emerging festival as well as Stockton Weekender (with Happy Mondays and Public Enemy headlining) and Split Festival (with Maximo Park, The Cribs and Dizzee Rascal), and a live session for BBC Introducing.”

We listened to their EP:

The disc begins with ‘Siam’ and edgy guitar – laced with tetchy percussion.

Giant waves of sound frame the edges of this song – and the vocal adds nervous tension.

A low beat plods along with regular fortitude – and the whole things blooms with sincerity and drama.

Repetition’ (released as a free download – see below) has a low presumptuous bass and shimmering guitars.

The lyrics on this made us smile.

We were recently chatting to the blues rock guitarist Larry Miller – commenting on the wonderfully fluid weepies he manages to wrest from his guitar.

Larry told us: “Blues is just basically all about repetition… Once you find something that works – you just need to do it over-and-over.”

Kobadelta’s repetition is just as steady. But a little grubbier than Larry’s. A little glummer too. And why not?

They Can’t Hurt Me’ has a rubbery bass and a vacant-twang.  It’s a slice of greasy cafe pulp-fiction.

The Heretic’ has a worrisome tick.  Like finding a mosquito has gone up your trouser leg.

The vocal is moody – and when the guitars sludge in with their full sleaze – you realize this is a significant track.

Dark as a cellar, and as heartbreaking as the things that you left down there in the dark, forgotten. Gloriously addictive too!
