Ditto Goes Hammer and Nail

We have written about the female fronted Voodoo Sci-Fi Blues Band Vienna Ditto from Reading (UK) before – comprising of Hatty Taylor on vocals, Nigel Firth on guitar and Scott Lawrence percussion.

Now the band release Hammer And A Nail.

The single will be out this week – and is from the forthcoming album, out in the spring.

Vienna Ditto – Burpy with trumpets, scattered with music box rhythms and stuffed with calliaphone-type off-pitch tones…

We had a listen:

Imagine, if you will, that the famed Italian Spaghetti Western composer Ennio Morricone had been taken hostage by the ska-pop new-wavers Fun Boy Three. During captivity some bonding had taken place. It is likely that the resulting sound they would go on to record would be something similar to this.

Based around an enduring melody – it’s a kind of jazz-based hot-pot with both pop and ska elements and some Latin horn. A fuzzy-thick sham of all night long sounds. Put in a rotary mixer and then folded into shape.

There’s also a large slice of barrel organ fun going on here. Burpy with trumpets, scattered with music box rhythms and stuffed with calliaphone-type off-pitch tones – This is a screwball day out on Steeplechase Island.

Taylor’s vocals are piped in clear and fresh – and also fuzzed-up and nuanced in the salty fun-of-the-fair whiplash air.

A bizarre confection of self-consciously dippy ska rhythms and carnival-atmosphere horns… with freshly piped vocals and exotic fairground attitudes.
