Ten Artists You Dare Not Miss Great Escape 2015

1: The Vryll Society

Vryll Society

The Vryll Society are from Liverpool and their ‘Beautiful Faces’ has cat-scrapes of the screamiest guitar and a tangle of other woven sounds.

A regular nodding-dog beat and distant vocals that seem yellowish against the ploughed up rhythms and jumbled sounds.

But this is exciting and rewarding. Oh! And dotted with psychedelic magic.

2: Oscar

OSCAR

North London’s Scheller AKA Oscar has created a beautiful ode to Daffodil Days.

The voice is darker chocolate than you can imagine.

You will fall into the luxurious deep folds.

But the song-writing is also passionate and dramatic.

So we are treated to soaring choruses and excited verses.

3: Flo Morrissey

Flo Morrissey

Flo Morrissey is a 20-year old London based singer-songwriter.

Her ‘Pages of Gold’ showcased the most astonishingly lyrical voice we have heard from a long time.

It slides down low and deep — but also creates lustrous highs. Dipping like a dove on the wing.

It’s a thing of beauty that does not forgive. And you will live with it till your dying day.

4: A.O.S.O.O.N.

A O S O O N

South London duo Marisa Hylton and Manny Folorunso or A.O.S.O.O.N. as they like to be known created the complex and deeply diverting “Same Difference.”

A roughly played acoustic guitar gives way to a darker and more fulsome arrangement, but this song never loses its grip on sensitivity, charm or commitment.

And those out- pouring voices are truly inspiring.

5: H. Hawkline

hawkline

H. Hawkline’s new album ‘In The Pink Of Condition’ is described (by the artist) as “strange pop”.

Ghouls’ had a tempered rhythm and burpy bass.

The Noel Coward vocal steps along in its gaiters and shiny shoes. Like a cross between Bryan Ferry and a slightly odd Paul McCartney…

Complete with casio keyboard wee-wees and clanger squeals.

6: Jane Weaver

Jane Weaver

Female experimental pop writer Jane Weaver creates shiny synth-pop with dashes of acid folk artistry.

Don’t Take My Soul’ has a dark bass-heavy band running through all those lighted stars and wonder.

The little voice is like a spider’s web of silver that shines inside a cave filled with jewels.

But though it is fine and delicate, this works well. An assortment of fragments incredibly well placed — the most perfect mosaic.

7: F.U.R.S.

FURS

F.U.R.S. are Londoners Elle, Liam, Olly and Amina. The four piece play stateside influenced psychedelic pop with a distinctly British sound.

I Wanna Know’ is reminiscent of Madonna meets Duran Duran in a party-ball disco in Brooklyn circa 1986.

The vocals are neatly flavoured and constantly plucky and brave. With accompanying vibrations that will (almost) make you wish you hadn’t given away your puff-ball or Filofax.

8: Seinabo Sey

Seinabo Sey

Seinabo Sey’s work has already been described as ‘Pop Music at the Next Level.’

Pistols At Dawn’ is an incredible composition.

And the ridiculously low vocal gets warmer, riper and becomes dangerously intoxicating as it grows more and more daring in your ears.

Soon it will slowly, magnificently and lustrously come into your heart. To completely devour you.

9: Django Django

Django Django

Scottish four-piece Django Django burst onto the scene in 2012 and we have been following them along ever-since … like a lovesick puppy.

First Light’ has a rhythm that elbows its way into the room like a stripper with a job to do.

The synths are sharp and so hot that they will burn holes in your clothing.

The angular vocals are neatly clipped (like a good thatch) and the composition is a cleverly patterned slice of tartan majesty.

10: Broods

Broods

New Zealand brother/sister duo Broods (Georgia Nott on vocals and older brother and multi-instrumentalist, Caleb on production and backing vocals) are well known for their unique twist of dark, ethereal pop sounds.

Bridges’ has sharply cutting, ice cold vocals that slice your rubber-soled surfaces to cut deep into your heart.

This would be enticing and rewarding enough — and perhaps it is — but it’s also wonderfully fresh and cool.

It will give you brain-freeze. Without a doubt.
