Album Review — NOVA HEART from Beijing — Silver Giggles and Low Moans

Helen Feng’s Nova Heart from Beijing, China have released their first album self-titled Nova Heart.

With Helen (on vocals and keys) and Bo Xuan (on bass) and Shi Lu aka Atom on percussion, their sounds are ethereal and unreal. Yet, also  as smooth as jazz… Although their sound includes traditional indie-rock.

The disc starts with the chattering ‘Drive To Our End’ which has evolving, elongated guitars and a stretched, staggering pace — with low moans — that speak of agony and regret.  Synth loops coil around the twiggy core. Amplifying and groaning until everything reaches crescendo.

Lackluster Number’ has a rubbery bass and giggles of silver. The roaring rhythms help to motivate and inspire.

And the dreamy voice reminds us, remarkably, of Debbie Harry.

We Are Golden’ starts with a loopy Pink Floyd-esqe tube-sound. The voice is extraordinarily unperturbed and electrifying. This will be a big hit on dance floors. It is elegant, graceful and benevolent.

My Song 9’ is an art-house sensation. Moody and blue yet fully cloudless. Complete with seagull squawks and low notes that dare to intrude into the water-coloured wash. This number engines along like a sun-struck Camaro on an empty road.

Optimal groove and heavy sentiments from this indie-rock band with fine-art ambitions.
