While celebrated for his electric guitar prowess, Johnson also excels on acoustic, lap steel, and resonator guitars, in addition to being a skilled bassist, pianist, and vocalist.
Even before recording his first album, the guitarist, a truly remarkable instrumentalist, was already a legend. By the dawn of the 1980s, numerous acclaimed musicians were enthusiastically endorsing the exceptional talent of the young guitarist from Austin. Critics likened his guitar playing to legends like Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix. When he joined the fusion group Electromagnets, the band’s proficiencies were described by many rock and blues aficionados as “the Mahavishnu Orchestra of Texas.”
After the Electromagnets disbanded, Johnson established the Eric Johnson Group, a touring trio featuring drummer Bill Maddox and bassist Kyle Brock.
His 1986 solo debut album “Tones” marked the fully formed emergence of the underground guitar legend onto the scene. Johnson graced the cover of Guitar Player magazine for his “majestic debut” album, which also secured him a Grammy nomination for “Zap.”

Johnson achieved guitar fame with his follow-up album, “Ah Via Musicom,” released via Capitol Records in 1990. This platinum-selling record included the Grammy-winning track “Cliffs of Dover,” cementing his status as an internationally recognised guitar virtuoso.
In addition to his seventeen solo albums, Johnson has contributed to other albums, including Eclectic with jazz guitarist Mike Stern and the platinum-selling G3 Live featuring Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. The musician has garnered eight Grammy nominations and a multitude of other accolades, awards, and wins from various polls and publications.
His ‘Texaphonic’ tour, originally from New Orleans to New York, featured a set of new blues rock power trio material. Johnson will be continuing his Texaphonic journey across the UK this summer.
