Don’t look now. But while you were distracted … Don Broco has stomped up behind and claimed rock glory for themselves. Everyone was too busy to notice.
After supporting the likes of ‘Enter Shikari’ and received approval from banging metal heads such as Kerrang! Don Broco have resolved to invade and occupy the suburbs and counties of Great Britain. (Yes, where you live!) Playing their stylized and strut filled geezer-rock anthems to your precious sons and daughters and your beloved brothers and sisters. And it’s working.
Yes, they are Dreamboy’s and their zigzag riff based alt/metal anthems tend to pop and burst over you like ripe pimples. Vocals that scour the larynx and power guitars that high jinx so much that they stretch the definition of ‘energetic’ to make the word comparable with ‘destructive’. And that’s before we even start with that thundering percussive power, the welding weight of those hammering beats almost brings the ceiling down – at The Haunt Brighton – where we saw them play live last Wednesday.
Songs like ‘Priorities’ with that classic rock edge – brazenly fiery riffs and stimulating drums. And a fiddling bass that plays mischievously with fickle guitars. A plethora of soft harmonies unravels from the tangle of metal to form a perfectly glorious rock tribute. “I miss you pumpkin …. I miss you babe…..” This is clearly about the agony of choosing your girlfriend over your mates… Or is it the other way around?
‘Top of the World’ frizzes like a shaggy fringe. A boomeranging beat that bounces back and forth. Then guitars crackle and sizzle simultaneously whilst that perfect vocal from Rob rips open your heart – so that tension can actually penetrate the bones and tenderise your aching innards.
‘We’re On Holiday’ contains punchy, porky and punky thrust. It’s like a rowdy night out with the boys. Friendly and full on at times … it can also get dangerous at others. Dress it up, and you can take it to dinner with your mom. But never forget – this would rather sink a few dozen lagers down the boozer, with like-minded companions.
So Don Broco is all cock n’ ball stuff. They are swagger and strut personified. And if you like ‘Rage Against the Machine’ or ‘Deftones’ – but you actually want to wear a white T shirt to the pub, and don some sensible skinny jeans, so that you can get into a club afterwards without fear of being turned away by the bouncers – then this band is probably perfect for you.
Debut “Priorities” available to order now.
