Interview with Heads Hearts
With a heap of bighearted vocals and more than a pinch of headstrong attitude, Heads Hearts (Amber Taylor-Groves , Lynne Porterfield and Abby Tythe) offer up electronic soul like you’ve never heard before. Since entering the scene in 2008, the London-based group have been impressing crowds up and down the UK with their anthemic dance tunes.
They’ve performed at festivals across the country, from L-Fest to a blistering set to over 4000 people at the Crystal Palace Festival, as well as sold out gigs at Cargo, Psychosocial, Monto Water Rats and the Dublin Castle. Heads Hearts are firmly establishing themselves as one of the best live acts on the electronic dance scene, performing alongside CHEW LiPS and the Freemasons and attracting fans like Maxi Jazz (Faithless).
If you’re into soulful vocals, pumping beats and music that fills you with the need to dance, you know where to come.
RAW RAMP: Hello, Heads Hearts. You have been featured in the ‘Diversity Role Models’ charity calendar this year – How do you feel about that?
Heads Hearts: It’s nice to be thought as role models. There are a lot of inspirational people in the calendar for all different reasons, so to be a part of that means a lot to us. People that come to our gigs & meet us will know that we always deliver 100% & each & every gig is important to us.
How was your 2012 L Fest ? Do you have any lasting memories?
L Fest was awesome and there are lots of fab memories, the sound cutting out in the middle of one of our songs due to a volume restrictor was not my favourite part but, it was a brilliant event to play. Also the Saturday night was a ton of fun, but that’s a different story…
How did it compare to the Pride events you have been involved with in the past?
It was a totally different vibe to a Pride, it was much more personal and chilled out. The crowd was a real special one, so happy and positive, it was like a big lovin.
Would you be pleased to appear at the L Fest again?
In a heartbeat.
Did you meet and hang-out with JOANovARC ? (Interviewed recently by Raw Ramp Music Mag ) What were they like?
Unfortunately we didn’t get to meet JOA no, we’ve been on a few line-ups with them but never actually met. We do all have a very good mutual friend though (Mel from Kenelis ) and there has been chat of all three of us bands putting on a gig together. Now that’s a night that will leave your ears ringing for a week! [ Laughs ]
How much do you enjoy working with Greymatter?
A lot, we’ve become good friends over the last few years, they are a hoot.
Do you share much common ground?
Only our love of music and the fact that we are all massive piss takers.
How do your performance rituals compare?
We are a world apart music and performance wise so no comparison is to be had, apart from we all make good noises.
What was your favourite gig of 2012?
We all loved L fest and the Dublin Castle, oh and not forgetting the crystal palace outdoor festival, having over 4000 people dancing there asses off to our set, we Love, love, loved it!
What are you most looking forward to in 2013?
Getting new material out and playing some BIG shows. We’ve already been booked to play a couple of prides and a few festivals which is a great start to the year.
Would you tell us about any new material or projects that you are planning?
The first of many is the EP which is due out end of February, this is really exciting. [the EP digital release is 25th February. Launch party – Water Rats, Kings Cross – 23rd March.]
Are there any over-seas shows on the horizon for Heads Hearts?
None as yet but we are working on it. We do often get asked to play overseas but it usually involves us being out of pocket in order to make it happen, which sometimes is worth it but we’re not millionaires so we have to pick and choose carefully.
What overseas event would you most like to play, given the chance?
Coachella festival would be insane, top of the list in fact. Also the Snowbombing in Austria, that looks fun too.
Any plans to make another sumptuous video like ‘In My Blood’ in the forthcoming year? Tell us about any new videos you may have in the pipeline.
We’re really excited about the new video, it’s being worked on as we speak. The guys who produce our previous videos (indigo rebel) know us so well and are fantastic at what they do. In short, you’re in for a treat. Stay tuned.
We recently described ‘Fear’ as having “… a pounding, migraine inducing beat [that] shovels you awake. ”And being like a “like a hornet trapped in a hanky…” Do you like to make music that makes people stand up and take notice? Do you try to make music that demands attention?
Hell yeah, of course we want people to take notice, but I don’t think we try and demand attention in a ‘look at me, pleeease look at me’ kind of way. Our music is a reflection of our characters and it’s just what comes naturally to us.
Thank you, Heads Hearts
