The Lightwings formed in February 2010 under the banner of ‘Britpop revival meets British Invasion’, are creating a new sound that has been coined as Beatpop. Set apart by their adept lyrics, English harmonies and clever use of melody, The Lightwings are South East London’s favourite up & cunning new band.
The band released their double single, Cheap Riches/Revolutions on 25 March 2013.
Both tracks are reminiscent of Indie and Britpop from its hey-day era combined with the British Rock ‘n’ Roll that took America by storm in the early to mid 60’s.
We had a listen:
‘Cheap Riches’ is as sequined as a rodeo queen’s star-spangled sombrero – and as joyful as the first hula dance of Spring. A chirpy back-beat chortles as the harmonies exquisitely bloom. The opulence continues with the jubilant pageantry of ringing guitar chords … these seem to be holding aloft a rich palanquin of embroidered, interlocking melodies. This stuff is lush, sinful and completely addictive.
In a world where Radiohead and The Verve never happened, it is always sunny – the days are getting longer – and songs such as ‘Revolutions’ play on the radio at all hours. The chorus on this track is shining, heady and intoxicating. Imagine ‘The Housemartins’ had arrived at your beach-hut – in their woodie and board-shorts – to celebrate the summer air. That’s what this is like. You’ll be twisting along to this number … long before the blissful guitar buzzes in … like a wasp drawn to the coco-milk. It’s a song for all the Moon Bay Mavericks out there – patiently waiting for summer to take hold. Take a long sip of this. And feel refreshed.
