Hello Phones The One

In 2012 those do-it-yourself New York  Punk Wave crafters ‘Hello Phones’ got it together to release their debut album “Get It Together” on Station Records.  We welcomed an assortment of synthy pop songs with dance elements, plenty of attitude, and all the noise and guitars that you would expect from a band with their roots in new wave.

With influences ranging from Blondie to Daft Punk and The Ramones, blurring the lines came naturally to them.

And now, after their remarkably motley debut album, the Hello Phones are back with a burst of new material (“Future City” is out December 2013) and they have released a first video to go with it.

We had a listen to Hello Phones – “The One”.  Here’s what we thought:

Hello Phones the one shortOnce again, mysterious tumbling forces and deep dark synths urge you up from your seats to play havoc with your internal transmission.

The first sounds are dark as ink. The voice of DonnaFran is as fresh as moonlight on a lonely lake.

The guttural drum (Dim Roc) then begins to beat with a pleasing grunt,  as other sparkling keys get folded into the pudding. And then an insistent chorus runs round-and-around your head.

The vid features some allegedly ‘Illuminati’ imagery – so go try to figure it all out.

The dirty slow-paced nihilism reminded of the kinda thing Gary Numan produced for us back in the late 70’s. Albeit sung by a sweet, dirty angel-punk.

And surely this cannot be a bad thing …  Can it?
