Sarah Dooley is a New York City based singer-songwriter. Her piano based indie pop / jazz confections are ingeniously crafted – containing complex beauty and simple truths. Her ‘Stupid Things’ self-released debut album, was released on February 11.
While still a student at Barnard College (class of 2011) the Indiana native wrote and starred in “And Sarah,” a mockumentary-style web series that went on to be featured in the New York Times Freakonomics blog and garnered over 160,000 views on YouTube.
We have been watching her video for “Peonies”:
Mischievous nymphs are said to hide within the folds of ‘Peonies’ and this blooming song is no exception.
Starting lightly, almost papery, the bleached sounds seem frayed around the edges – but the succulent root of the song – the voice of Sarah – is grafted firmly to the stock.
But just after a minute into the piece, the songs bursts abundantly from the bud – and the rate increases until it reaches a cantering pace with the shivering beauty of the vocals beginning their lustrous, silvery-shining rise.
This song may seem happy-go-lucky – perhaps even maliciously carefree – but Sarah has a plan…
This is a potion of mixed-up alchemy designed to summon up a suitor … and it is a subtle divination. It looks like it should pay off. A gem.
