Milky Chances and Stolen Dances

Nobody expected them and nobody saw them coming.

But here they are – Clemens Rehbein and Philipp Dausch alias Milky Chance from Kassel, Germany – and it is difficult to imagine where we would be without this unique and exceptionally talented duo who released their first album “Sadnecessary” in an over-nonchalant DIY manner that was marked by both genuine enthusiasm and a vulnerability that seemed almost childlike in its optimism.

milky chance latitudeTheir music is best described as a mixture of singer-songwriter, folk & reggae with an electronic underlining.

Clemens’ vocal sounds mature and aloof – as if it belonged to some lonesome cowboy who is full of wisdom and has decades of stage experience – but it belongs to a kid who has only just graduated from high school.

Lead single “Stolen Dance” from Sadnecessary accumulated over 500,000 views on YouTube in less than one months …

We had a listen :

The simply strummed accompaniment and those lightly dressed rhythms aptly suit the appropriately yeasty voice of Clemens.

His vocal sits atop the carefully engineered latticework – and brings to mind the work of the early millennium soul/hip-hop singers ( a subtle mix of CeeLo Green/André 3000/ Big Boi perhaps.) This is a terrific song.

One thing is certain – you will end up feeling that all your optimism has been cheerfully shot down once you’ve had a listen to this song.

It’s a right mix of emotions…
