Frustrated by the “state of rock ‘n’ roll” the London-based low-fi punk pioneers and crazy Canadians Benjamin Balan (bass) & Chris Keelan (drums) joined forces with Irishmen Neil O’Keeffe (lead vocals) & Paul Keane (guitars) to set-up The Hertz Complex project in 2013.
Since then, the outfit has headlined the ‘Whisky A Go Go’ – landed their first festival appearance – and scored a soundtrack on ‘The Pact.’
Now they issue their debut EP ‘A New Habit’ [14th July 2014]. We listened to the next single (taken from the forthcoming album) ‘Maybe I Know’.
Wallowing great guitars gurgle and mew right out of the speakers – then grab you by the trachea. And that is how it starts.
Then a sleepy voice bites the air.
It’s hard and cold. As flinty as a tombstone.
But the voice flutters – and rises like a vulture frightened by noise – and then it reaches a high point. It begins to sound warm and opal.
And the guitars become glorious streamers and the whole piece is as sweet and as darkly rich as butter cake.
This is immensely beautiful number. Handsome, tragic and perhaps even a little malevolent.
Maybe, they know…
