Prides and Lauren Aquilina went into the studio together …. and this is what happened
The Scottish synthpop trio Prides have just released this lush summer wonder – with the magical English singer-songwriter Lauren Aquilina.
This fascinating piece begins with a ringing tone vaguely heard above the keys. This dramatic setting is for a soap opera of sorts.
Gradually Stewart’s voice germinates – radiating out against the backwash – with indispensable passion. This main voice is fringed by Lauren’s backing.
The beautiful chorus rises high – creating long vapour trails of truth.
Then Lauren’s vocal spears through the piano accompaniments.
The lyric “Just lie … and say we’re fine…” reminds us that this song – even if optimistic in style and majesty – is about strained relationships.
Thus, the coupling and the bending of the main voices seems perfectly suited.
The beat (Lewis on drums) is often a magnificent and ambitious rumble … and he continues to pound away against those thin membranes of synth sound. These melt into the architecture of the song.
At around the 2:20 mark there is a passionate call and response phase … quite recognizable to fans of hip-hop … and this puts the song in a completely different class.
Into new territories so far not explored by indie rockers.
The result is a down-wash of incredible forces … that will leave you gasping for more.
You will not be strong enough to fight this!
