The iconic roots-n-rock group THE COMMONERS from Canada create smudgily gritty, riff-based rock-stompers that hold just enough splotch & jangle to elevate their songs above the average country-rock to produce sounds of exceptionality, effectiveness, and very high quality craftsmanship.
We were lucky enough to see the band perform in the excellent Komedia, Brighton earlier this year and thought their blues-rock numbers shifted between country-then-gospel moments with rare aplomb, the keys really glowed, while guitars rainbowed across a luminescent backdrop of vocal sounds.
“Devil Teasin’ Me” is the first single from the band’s highly anticipated forthcoming third studio album, to be released worldwide by Gypsy Soul Records in 2024.
The song presents yielding goodnatured harmony and superfriendly Southern charm, though the song’s lyrical content suggest a Faustian moment in which the artist is persuaded to forego spiritual principles in favour of fame, success, and wealth.
“Devil Teasin’ Me” embodies the spirit of rock, blues, soul, and roots,” offers the band’s lead singer, Chris Medhurst. “We wanted to capture the sheer excitement of roots rock. This is the music that we listen to.”
“The Black Crowes are a considerable influence for us,” he adds. “Derek Trucks, Marcus King, Led Zeppelin, and The Allman Brothers Band, too. These are the bands that we wear on our sleeves as we aspire to create our own music and sound.”
