The word “humongous” originated in the United States in the late 1950s, probably in the Air force, and is influenced by the words “huge” and “monstrous” to mean an extremely large problem or a threat that will be difficult to overcome.
The fictional character Lord Humungus from the Mad Max movie, a man afflicted by terrible facial burns so must wear a mask, was created by director George Miller: In the film, Humungus is the leader of a group of post-apocalyptic marauders.
