CHARLOTTE WESSELS‘ The Obsession and VOLA’s Asger Mygind collaborate on an eerie new witching hour showpiece “Backup Plan” — a vulnerable duet that’s played out between life and demise.
The classically-trained Dutch singer-songwriter Charlotte Wessels is perhaps best known as the former lead vocalist for the symphonic metal band Delain.
Since her departure from Delain, Charlotte has embarked on a thriving solo career. Her third studio album, The Obsession, was released on 20th September 2024.
VOLA are a Danish progressive metal band formed in Copenhagen in 2006, formed by vocalist and guitarist Asger Mygind.
Charlotte’s voice is
Raw Ramp
moon-round enchanting
while Asger’s is
androgenous and archangelic…
This autumnal release not only brings the two artists together after Charlotte and her band’s 2024 performance on VOLA’s ‘Friend of a Phantom‘ Tour, but also commemorates The Obsession’s first anniversary, which is a suitable occasion to introduce such haunting sounds.
Charlotte says, “It’s wild to think it’s been a year since The Obsession came out, yet this record still has stories to tell, it’s like it’s been quietly evolving alongside us.”
“The digital deluxe edition is our way of giving those stories another breath and expanding the world of the album. It feels like the perfect bridge to what’s coming next: the Arcane Dimensions Tour with Epica and Amaranthe in early 2026, a new adventure where these songs can live, transform, and connect in entirely new ways.”
Although the song takes a darker turn with harmonic shadowing and atmospheric ghostliness, “Backup Plan” is a delicate duet with a keen sense of anticipation that rises with exquisite progression. Charlotte’s voice is moon-round enchanting while Asger’s is androgenous and archangelic. Exorcising!
