The German techno producer SCNTST (Bryan Müller) will be releasing his debut album ‘Self Therapy’ on Boysnoize Records on 25th November. Discovered by Alex Ridha – his styles range from warehouse techno/electronica to melancholic bass – his tracks are always authentic and original.
He recently produced Azealia Banks‘ upcoming single ‘Soda’.
We had an early listen to ‘Self Therapy‘- here’s what we thought:
The album starts with ‘Velour’ which comes at you out of the snow – like a sleigh full of goodies and fairy-lights. ‘Waves Change’ is as wrinkled as a six-pack on a goofy-foot surfer riding a wave . This is sensual and fresh – like a refreshing rain shower on a hot day . ‘Park By Night’ is darker and fizzier. As if a kazoo had become stuck in the throat of a Walrus. Talking drums and membranophones add to this exotic feast.
After the “suit / summer / suit /summer” itchy rhythms of ‘Percee Scan’ we get to ‘Kid Adventure’ which is probably a self-portrait. A mix of fast-pressed oils on canvas, create little nuggets of sounds and bright colours. These twist and turn like flakes in a viscous liquid. ‘Murder’ is cymbal-based and chirps like an overexcited snowy tree cricket.
The Chilliger Track ( feat German rapper Jean Bordello) is a fairly standard day-tripper- loose-hipped, gentle – a rucksack of vibrations. ‘So Though’ is more atmospheric – a flight through a starry universe. A mid-riff and an unusually cut cushion of soft velvety textures. ‘Fovea’ (it’s the term for the pitfall of the eye – necessary for sharp vision) has a floating tent of threadbare textures before the percussion beats about-the-bush. After this the track starts to ascend – like a navigator following a crazy-paved path.
‘Mintra’ is stormy and pulls out those mole crickets again. It’s not a mantra (too small) so it must be a mintra. ‘King Of Beets’ (love the title – brings to mind a highly awarded taproot ) is not quite as erroneously named as you might first think. The Latin for beet is Beta Vulgaris – in other words the authentic final release in a (song) cycle. This is an assorted pastry of sounds. One minute gurgling and hiccuping – the next grumbling Audrey II sounding bass-voice. This is very rocky horror (think ‘Little Shop of Horrors.’)
The best is left for last – the revelation song on this wonderful album is ‘Self Therapy.’ It is long and contagious. A drawn out yawn of sounds breathes wheezily in-and-out as a continuous plethora of ideas distend from the open throat of emotions. Falling flak misses its target.
Although conflict theory enjoins us not to expect that God is a scientist – there is still a spiritual reality to be found here.
The Scntst combines the laws of physics (mathematical rhythms, agile keyboards, well developed song structures) with something else … something higher, less selfish, more charitable … more divine. Go seek your therapy here.
