She hails from the Bronx, New York and already 21-year-old singer-songwriter Maxine Ashley – who was discovered by Pharrell Williams and then signed to his i am OTHER label – will be heard on the big screen.
The intoxicating performer’s new track, ‘Guerrilla’ is the lead song from forthcoming film, ‘Trash’, that stars Wagner Moura, Selton Mello, Martin Sheen and Rooney Mara.
‘GUERRILLA’ is an energetic monster of a track that was produced by Pharrell Williams and allows for Maxine to highlight her talent for languages, as she takes on the entire song in Spanish and Portuguese – learning the latter in a single day.
Maxine released her debut EP ‘Moodswings’ last month, which includes the stunning single, ‘Perpetual Nights’ and her own take on Portishead’s ‘Glory Box’. She will next appear as a guest feature on the latest Billon track, ‘Special’ which will be released on November 3rd.
We listened to Guerrilla:
With a rubber hook that grabs you and pulls you in immediately – and the kind of chattering breakers yard rhythms that will shuffle your shin-pad for hours – this is a hearty slice of exciting house pop.
Ashley’s voice is best served at the 2:30 intersection, where her sticky-sweetness and fluid delivery is properly show-cased.
Then the voice reminds us of the mildness of Sia combined with the attitude of J.Lo.
Guerrilla actually means ‘little war’ – so Guerilla Music is – as a result – a low-budget affair … driven by a passion to get it done.
This is music that’s not made in the streets… but in the wrecking yard.
It’s a real skill to accumulate, break, recycle and re-build all that junk. And Ashley does a wonderful job.
Más por favor!
