The band’s name is derived from Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow, the infamous American bank robbers from the early Great Depression period. “Jukebox Gipsies”, the band’s 2023 debut album, was a major contender on lists of the “Best of 2023.”
We’ve described Parker Barrow’s captivating vintage vibe, a nostalgic hipness that incorporates elements of blues, soul, and southern rock as, “super-impressive” with vocalist Megan Kane’s song-voice smooth & gritty as “asphalt and butterfat served on a retro 1960s ramekin!”
The new “Hold the Mash” album features songs from last year’s extended play, to include singles “Make It,” “Novocaine,” “The Healer,” and “Glass Eyes Cryin’,” alongside four new songs including the band’s 2026 single “Blinded” and the more recent “Nothin’ Left to Save” (see lyric video shared below), plus a cover of the Black Crowes’ “My Morning Song.”
“Nothin Left To Save was the last song written for the record,” explained Parker Barrow’s drummer Dylan Turner.
“Lyrically I had most of the verses written for some time. It wasn’t until hearing the track that it all came together. The up-tempo rock n roll nature of the song was just what we needed to round out the record and, in our ears, make it feel complete.”
Thus, “Nothin’ Left to Save” is a breezy 70s’s-style off-roader, gutsy, hard-edged, wire-wheeled and well-framed, and filled with blustery beats, barrel-rolling guitars, and diesel fumes aplenty. In fact, the song delivers the type of freewheeling rock ‘n’ roll eagerness you’ thought had all-but-gone with the demise of the classic line-up of the Band. Exceptional!
“Blinded” (written by Dylan Turner & Alex Bender) is a sun-kissed sway that features a distinctly recognizable English hard-rock riff, probably reminiscent of Andy Fraser (if we’re honest), with Megan’s vocals becoming a heady blend of sweet soul and gutsy rock, accompanied by handclaps, dazzling keys, and skilled backing vocals.
“Novocaine” explores the damage caused by fickle love and the hurt of being left behind by someone you cared for, so, with energetic beats and moving guitar, the song vividly conveys a depth of emotional ruin. It’s wonderful! The texture is simultaneously smooth and sticky, resembling a combination of glue and oil.
In fact, on repeated listen, “Novocaine” arrives like a summer shower on a hot tin roof with Megan’s voice bringing a satisfying sense release, much like a neckcloth wrung out on a sweltering hot day. As vibrant rhythms pulse from this song’s inner core, we feel the rush of energy, feeling, and life-giving impetus that we require if we mean to carry on.
With intense excitement, the chorus delivers a thrilling and satisfying auditory journey to the finish…
“Make It” kicks off with a vibrant, scrambling riff and a rhythmic clatter, showcasing Megan’s dynamic and rich, fiery voice. With intense excitement, the chorus delivers a thrilling and satisfying auditory journey to its finish.
“The Healer” is a lively, rock-infused track characterized by a slide guitar, an energetic feel in its bones, super-compelling rhythms, and vocals that are reminiscent of Robert Plant. The song is about liberation and transcending boundaries, and it evokes (for us) the best of Blackberry Smoke, Tedeschi Trucks, and Led Zeppelin, all set within a rich blend of modern rock influences.
“Glass Eyes” combines a dynamic guitar sound with skilful, measured vocals, presented with a striking approach and bursts of daring energy.
This is a collection of bright songs that showcase unmistakable Seventies-style (English) hard-rock guitar and retro rhythms with super-impressive vocals, to merge grit and polish within vintage soundscapes. Awesometastic!
