We’ve described Erja’s melody-rich blues as “vital and fiery,” her guitar work as “a thing of wonder,” and her no-nonsense boogie blues “salaciously exciting!”

the song blossoms into a soaring, resilient chorus full of elastic strength…

On the live recording, “One Thing I Won’t Change,” originally from Erja’s 2010 album Voracious Love, features glam punk legend Sami Yaffa (Hanoi Rocks, New York Dolls, Joan Jett) on bass and backing vocals. This performance has an irregular, notched rhythmic texture, with the edges of sound gently gnawed, driven by a greasy, bread-and-butter bass riff. Then the song blossoms into a soaring, resilient chorus full of elastic strength. The guitar playing is nothing short of remarkable, and the overall feeling this rock anthem imparts is one of pure indestructibility.

When performed live, “Ball and Chain” carries a slick, ‘slidey’ feel, powered by a grungy riff and a punchy chorus.

“Smell the Roses” is tenacious and insistent. Built on a zigzag motif, it delivers a catchy melody, a sweeping arrangement, and gritty vocals. At its core, this is a tale of denial and grasping desire.

“Abyss” begins with a dark spine of sound, gloomy and heavy in nature, and is uncompromisingly loud. Despite its experimental edge and heavy use of effects, the piece remains a pure blues experience. The musical imagery is intricate and breathtaking, with the entire track coming across as delightfully expansive.

ERJA LYYTINEN 50th Birthday Live 2026 is an outstanding collection confirming that this radiant artist thrives on the live stage… playing hard, feeling deeply, and evolving her artistry with fearless commitment. It’s not just essential for existing fans; it’s a must-have collection for anyone who loves blues and rock played with soul, with fire, and with total conviction.
