Natalie Duncan is an English soul singer from Nottingham- signed to Verve Records. She releases her highly anticipated album Devil In Me next month.
We had an advance listen to this exciting singer, who has already been compared to Aretha Franklin:
‘Devil In Me’ – The title song has a sincerely anguished mood and yet has its tongue placed firmly in its cheek- especially as this buxom song starts to burst out of the confines of its corseted entrapment in such a startling fashion. Is it operatic? Perhaps, the la-da-da tippy-toe picturesque elements more than remind you of operetta – but the syrupy filling also sustains memories of musical hall sentiment and merges well with the grown up sultry and soulful playfulness. But mainly, this is a big brassy blues number.
‘Sky is Falling’ – wallows in a syrup of its own self pity- the greasy drops of warm rainy vocals will splash over you mixing tears with sweat. This is a hot and humid piece.
‘Gimme Shelter’ – is a rootin’ tootin dream of a song. Feel the dirt on your heels as you take to the dusty road with this number on your stereo. Vocals sound reminiscent of Stevie Nicks (in tenderness and drama) – but become a lot more bountiful … with those warmer tones… Yes, you can hear Roberta Flack in this song. This is an immediately satisfying lump of magnificence.

I recently had the joy and privilege of recording a stunning live session, and incredibly honest and open interview with Natalie for my pod/vidcast, which includes Lonely Child, Lovers on the washing line and Songbird. I’m blown away, and hope you are too! 🙂
