The Birmingham ‘Bombers’ (Oooh! … Little bit of politics there … ) Matty Warke, Daz Mullen, Dave Owen and Dave Duell were voted Best New Midlands Band in 2011. The band have now released a debut 5 track EP through Dead London Records.
Operating for just over a year, ‘Bombers’ have been developing a growing audience across the UK, shifting tracks and being lauded in everything from grass roots blogs to national press such as the NME. Artrocker said they were a bit like : “The Birthday Party running riot in Joy Division’s and Swans back garden”. The Independent remarked that the band was one of several leading lights in the blooming ‘B-Town’ movement – spearheading the second city’s musical resurrection.
The new single ‘Drawing / Buddy’s In A Cult’ will be released Monday 28th January 2013. We had an early listen:
Listening to ‘Drawing’ is like being stuck in a shoe-box with a horde of moths. Flappy, itching, and a lot of fluttering sounds … it kinda drives you crazy. It’s not an entirely unpleasant experience, though. But when you get out, you will want to have a good scratch.
The vocals on ‘Drawing’ … (“I can tell I’m going wrong … ”) are lively, juicy and unrefined. Just how we like them. And the crunchy guitar sounds (from Matty ) are as snappy as an irritated alligator at feeding time. Drums ( from David ) are neat, cracking and sting you like a gnat. This song hooks you under the collar, right from the start. And it soon tugs you right in.
‘Buddy’s In a Cult’ has a cocky bass-line, and a sizzling guitar that froths around the edges. Shadowy vocals are spooned out – and may remind you of early Lou Reed. The story about ‘Buddy’ the guy who “ Has all the answers …” rapidly progresses from chat to panic. It‘s a clear message, brazenly flashed out … and swiftly executed in a fresh protopunk style. And it is all surprisingly cheerful under the circumstances.
We cannot wait to hear more from The Bombers.
