Mythic Folk Rock in the Wellingborough Sunshine — SERPENTYNE at the Medieval Festival

Who would have thought that you would see or hear a didgeridoo at a Medieval Festival?

Nevertheless, the “drone pipe” worked well, especially on sounds like the wonderfully expressive darkness of “Boudicca” (Queen Of The Celts).”

Apparently Andrea Furlan produces his own didgeridoos…

We caught up with SERPENTYNE who were playing live last weekend at the superb Wellingborough Medieval Fest in Northamptonshire, England.

In addition to the full band (in costume) — we were also delighted by some refined and relaxing “Firedance” from the girls of the Ya Raqs troupe: [https://www.facebook.com/YaRaqsDeva]

And we were treated to a bunch of wonderfully evocative hymns brought to us by the talented myth-rock band.

Songs that were (mostly) about exotic and courageous divas across the ages, such as Freya, Boudicca and a host of Valkyries.

This was an afternoon of Celtic legend-spinning, prog-rock majesty and beautifully lyrical workmanship.

Maggie-Beth Sand’s voice is lightly operatic. Her song soars across those authentic folk sounds…

With Mark Powell on magical hurdy-gurdy, Pam Pecko-Smith on fluid flute (and also  providing backing vocals and other whistles) Mark Jenkins creating a wonderful blanket of weave on synthesiser and Jay creating drama on the drums.

And lets not forget that the bottom-end of all these songs is played on didgeridoo by Andrea!

We were treated to a rousing new ‘pirate’ song that the band are still working on about Captain Santana (Santeano). The band soon had the healthy crowd in Wellingborough Church Yard singing along merrily to the chorus.

And after a slightly unseasonable and medieval version of Gaudete (normally associated with Christmas and popularized by Steeleye Span) — the show ended with the ‘Game of Thrones’ theme [Ramin Djawadi] which demonstrated the magical instrumental ability of this uniquely talented band.
