Electric folk singer-songwriter YVONNE MCDONNELL began performing folk around her native Portsmouth UK in 2011.
Now based in London, she takes inspiration from artists like Johnny Cash and Nick Cave though women have largely influenced her sound.
She is often compared favourably to to Joan Armatrading, The Cranberries’ Dolores O’Riordan or Tracy Chapman.
We listened to her recently released “I’m Not This Layer of Skin” an inspirational song [turned into an excellent video funded by indiegogo pledgers] that encourages women of all ages to learn that substance doesn’t rely on appearance.
The handsome guitar work evokes strength and natural virtue while the warm semisweet cinnamon and chocolate syrup vocal suggests struggle and resistance.
The chorus is ornamented by a sad cello sound. The whole piece is mindful and sincere.
