Phildel Live at the Shhh Festival

Phildel is a unique singer / songwriter who composes music inspired and driven by her vivid imagination.

Phildel writes, performs, arranges and produces all of her own work.

We were lucky enough to see her perform live at the wonderful Shhh Festival – Heath Street Baptist Church – on Saturday, February 2, 2013.

DSC_0201Starting off with ‘Storm Song’ with a moody infestation of squirming contralto tones – contrasted vividly against soprano tendrils – the sound of  Phildel reminded us of Lana Del Rey (although, possibly, more accomplished.)

The complexity of her voice was set against a backdrop of yawning bass-notes and flowering keys.  And the whole song had a pacing  rhythm … it reminded us of running from the edge of an approaching storm. It was a delicate, trembling  piece. We were left shaking with delight. It was a perfect song for the ornate setting of the Heath Street Baptist Church – with a light murmering from the keyboards and the gentle taps on cajón. (Constructed earlier from a discarded book-case).  “What do you think the drum is made from?”  Phildel asked the well-behaved audience. “A coffin?” Suggested a female voice.  Somehow, the answer made perfect sense.

After the  hypnotic silvery delight of  ‘Moonsea’ we were treated to the joyful flock of feathers that was ‘Union Stone’. The vocals on this song were so lightly daubed –  against the delicate tapping of percussion  – that the words seemed like silver pollen-dust grains flaking progressively around us.  Confetti in the daintiest breeze. This was a song of total, enchanting adornment . With an almond sugar melody and a tinselly accompaniment.

The penultimate song was ‘Beside You’. This was very reminiscent of the fragile songs from the Lionhearted days of Kate Bush. In fact, the shimmering melody was very recognizably 1970’s. This song was built from sugar-strings – lightweight, incredibly sweet and infinitely precious.

Bitch please. She has nothing to do with Lana del Rey. For one thing, she can actually sing. For another, she writes good music. I don’t really understand why each and every songstress on earth keeps being compared to that worthless, talentless thing.
