THE PET GOATS — Cartoons

Some bands taste like perfumed bubble bath and hour-long sessions in front of the shaving mirror. Not The Pet Goats, never ever!

Noise and Trash are the only flavour enhancers that this group from the rotten Big Apple uses. Raw guitars beat the crap out of a fistful of chords, weaving them to form an hypnotic wall of sound. The rhythm pounds as if the drummer worked out the beat on various kitchen appliances of The Velvet Underground´s Mo Tucker. You don´t have to be punk to play great Punk Rock.  Less is always more, if you got something to say.  The Pet Goats are no cuddly toys; but maybe a new favourite band, if you´re into the great NYC Noiserock heritage.

The Pet Goats

The Pet Goats have now released their Cartoons EP.  We took a listen:

Marching ‘Military Mind Control’ paces along with infantry steps,  unpolished guitars and a preponderance of stylistic bruises. Pointed vocals (Andrew Mangold) mockingly criticize the military mind at work, while the disburdening guitar chords grow into the faltering mess, and ascend into an amazing climax of power and dust.

Zbigniew Knows’ is a fierce and turbulent lament. With contortions of guitars and a primitive flexion of drums (from Andi Wurscher.).  Then the mustachiod ‘Cartoons’ sneeks in like the proverbial cat that got the cream. This is a song of ridicule – with vocals that are randomly smeared –  and guitars that tempestuously adorn the rumbling drums.

Tales Of Old Street Fighters’ has the same kind of boogie as ’Cartoons’. Beating out a presumptuous and a sub-atmosphere seventies type sound. This song is like a bump in the night. You do not realize it how much  it hurts.  Till later.

Finally, ‘Subway To The Zoo’ arrives. It seems like this was formed in the days of vintage Lou Reed (Transformer 1972.) With words that are reminiscent of “Perfect Day.” Muddy guitars –  and voices that way-point – are almost spoken. It’s driving bass-note beats (from  Dietmar Schrödl) eventually start the blooming … and then we approach a crisis of extraordinary gnawing sounds.
