Aurganic Deviations

Aurganic is an experimental electronic/alternative project of two long-time friends Michael Kossov and Leo Pisaq from Toronto, Canada.

Originally high school classmates, they were members in a number of local punk rock bands until life separated them for a number of years. As the time passed,  their tastes had changed. They reconnected musically in 2010 finding a lot of common ground and a mutual love of electronica, art rock and jazz.

The band issue their new  full length album “Deviations” this month.  We had a listen:

Aurganic shortThe album starts with ‘Choices’ (ft. singer / songwriter Joel Goguen) and has a fuzzy, heathery feel to it – as if the sounds have been piped out across a pattering mist of rising, tapering contours. A flicking percussion fusses around the chocolatey vocals. These spit and spray across the briny stained landscape

Waking Trials’ features Here Below’s Scott Carruthers. This is a shimmering achievement with some astonishingly glorious moments of drama and feeling.  ‘Lucid’  is little slower and far more angular.  The voice is soft … as fragile as a papery dusty-wing in flight. Acoustic guitars chuckle as they add a warm glow of health to the bundle of nervous ticks and textures that lie beneath.

Single Motion Sound’ has a peculiar rat-a – tat- tat pace and a guitar sound that is tartly syringed into the edges.  ‘Swells’ is rubbery and bubbly. Although the  tempo is a mechanically long march, the voice remains eager and enthusiastic. This is a warm and inviting piece.

Outcast’  is all about being lost –  or at least hidden for now.  The rhythms are sharply prickled  – you will feel as if your skin has been infested.  The glossy harmonies overlap and form musical garlands of skillful perfection.  This is an exceptional piece . With some significant ideas : “Fear no more your future is secure…” and a universally acceptable seductiveness.

In Deep Waters’ is fruity and spongy . With spores of piano that fly away in gently swaying moments.

Folk-jazz vocalist Jessica Stuart lends her voice on ‘Easy’.  And as the title suggests,  this is a late breakfast on Sunday,  lazy-day- kind-of-song.  It is sluggish  and slightly indolent.  With Jessica’s hot buttery vocals oozing from the various hairline cracks in the enamel.

Title track ‘Deviations’ completes this intelligent and enlightened album. The glistening piano is stark against a fuzzy wave of tempering synths. The bass groans and turns-upon-itself, and little sprinkles of guitar illuminate the darkest corners.  An instrumental piece – it is a fitting conclusion to a collection of wonderful shapes and glamourous textures that will require repeated re- listens . And constant re – categorization.

Hotly recommended.
