Leeds based Alt-Rock/Math-Core three piece ‘ Bearfoot Beware’ have announced the release of their third EP (this time on Mountains of Records) titled ‘Bruises and Business’, on the 2nd October.
Formed in late 2010, when guitarist and vocalist Tom Bradley and bassist Ric Vowden bonded over their shared love of 90s American hardcore punk and the burgeoning math rock scene of the time, the line-up was completed with the addition of drummer Mike Osborne.
We had an early listen. Here’s what we thought:
‘Trellum’ is a stew of jangled guitars and crisply fried quavers – with devilishly punked-out vocal cords – wrapped around distorted membranes. The percussion is as wild as a clapper-board being operated by a hyper kid on super-strength tartrazine. The bass is hollow and husky. And a glow of lighted guitar-song sees out the end of the tune.
‘Fox Boy’ seems more natural. It has a twiggy percussive texture and a faltering vocal line. Lyrically, this is complicated – with ideas squeezed really close together – as if that’s the only way to fit some of the unused colours into the stitching.
Some of this is interspersed with cosmically hippy vibes. Jazz fans and even prog-rock fans will find something here to entertain them, although most of the sounds are jarring and thoroughly awkward. The angry vocals are always subversive and energetic.
Bearfoot Beware will enrage and confuse. For sure. But, of course, they are indispensable.
