HIGHLY SUSPECT — Rock with a Hip Hop Ethos feat. YOUNG THUG

The 3x Grammy Award Nominated Rock Outfit HIGHLY SUSPECT have surpassed their genre by going all-out with YOUNG THUG on a new collab titled “Tokyo Ghoul”.

Highly Suspect, an American rock band from Cape Cod in Massachusetts were nominated for Best Rock Song at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards with “My Name Is Human” (released 2016.) The band comprises of twin brothers Rich Meyer (bass guitar, backing vocals) and Ryan Meyer (drums, backing vocals) with Johnny Stevens aka “Terrible Johnny” (on guitar, synth & lead vocals). Matt Kofos also adds guitar and vocals.

American rapper, singer, and songwriter, YOUNG THUG (Jeffery Lamar Williams ) is best known for his feature on the 2017 hit song “Havana” by pop-star Camila Cabello. He was awarded the Grammy Award for Song of the Year at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards for his songwriting contributions to “This Is America” (Childish Gambino) with Donald Glover and Ludwig Göransson.

Tokyo Ghoul
Tokyo Ghoul – delivered proudly with the glint of mainstream elegance…

Rock band HIGHLY SUSPECT  will be hoping to change the course of the rock genre and alter perceptions for their third album titled “MCID”. They will be collaborating, not only with Young Thug, but also with metal band Gojira, rapper Tee Grizzley, and English alt-rock band Nothing But Thieves, as well as singing Swahili versus, and issuing a single, “Sixteen” that is completely guitar-free.

You say that you love me, but don’t I wanna be your slave…” Johnny sings with emotionality as a flickering beat emerges. The lyrical content is kinda-reminiscent of XXXTentacion and it’s not as experimental as perhaps you might have hoped (not manga, either) but actually this has a smooth and sophisticated glossiness, delivered proudly with the glint of mainstream elegance. There’s a stream of bubbly synth-type sounds and some blunt-ended auto-tune voice, and this adds a sense of robotic artfulness. Heartfelt.

If Run–D.M.C. and their “Rock Box” (with Eddie Martinez) back in ’84 was the fore-running commercially successful rap-rock crossover — a commercial hit-making formula taken further by producer Rick Rubin during the 1990s — then it’s highly likely Highly Suspect will take it to the next level. Will they do it for the roaring twenties? Let’s see…
