ZAC SCHULZE GANG Live in Brighton

We were pleased to witness the superphenomenonal ZAC SCHULZE GANG the band from Medway, Kent who were the special guests of EDDIE 9V’s on his Spring UK tour.

We saw the band perform at the friendly Komedia venue in Brighton, Sussex.

The Gang, one of the hardestworking bands on the live scene, was founded in Gillingham in 2021.

Built upon Schulze’s powerful guitar & vocal performances, the ensemble draws inspiration from 20th-century performers including Dr. Feelgood and Rory Gallagher to develop infectiously passionate, high-energy blues rock.

The power trio also includes the Henry the Eighthish and elaborately gurning bassist/vocalist Ant Greenwell, and Zac’s brother, drummer/vocalist Ben Schulze.

The Gang has played at Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Festival in Los Angeles and is a frequent performer on festival circuits across Europe, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.

Raw Ramp

Wearing a Rory Gallagher baseball cap pulled down over his eyes, making him look like Mike Myers plays Wayne Campbell, Zac seems a remarkably humble musician; every applause he received at the Komedia came as a mild suprise to the artist. Yet his guitar-play was unmatched; the sounds turned moody and atmospheric, then at other times, the output was electro-fluid and elemental.

The vocals and vibrations were consistently rich. Sincere, even. That’s not to suggest the band wasn’t optimistic and boisterous while performing; rather, that they approach their work with a sense of diligence and seriousness.

With drumming tighter than a row of thumbscrews and brilliantly ludicrous musicianship throughout, the 30 minute set included the Rufus Thomas cover Walking The Dog that arrived with layers of hydropelvic bass, and extended transmission lines of lime sharp guitar, all propelled by constantly dynamic percussion.

The South Coast fans were also treated to an urgent rendition of Dr Feelgood’s She Does It Right with all the boosting frantic need of the original but with extra frazzled bite and breakneck guitarwork that seemed as agonised as a hornet in a jar. Hoppingly good!
