It’s turning out to be a great week for guitar based blues rock.
Award winning blues artist Jack White has reached number 1 on the album chart – finally overthrowing the soft core soul diva Adele from the top slot with his new release ‘Blunderbuss‘.
Ranked as one of “The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” [Rolling Stone] Jack White’s popular success came with the band The White Stripes. But more recently he has embarked upon a solo project.
And this month he released his debut solo disc (on his own label Third Man Records in association with XL Recordings and Columbia Records.) Considered by many critics as an emotional outburst of tormented genius, ‘Blunderbuss’ has enjoyed a turnover of more than 100,000 units in the first week week of sales alone, proving that blues-rock is far from forgotten.
This week also sees Burnley (Lancashire, England) host one of the biggest and best festivals of the blues in Europe. Tempting legends to these soggy shores such as Dallas based Jimmie Vaughan (Fabulous Thunderbirds), and Connecticut raised Sugar Ray and the Bluetones.
This weekend THE BURNLEY INTERNATIONAL ROCK AND BLUES FESTIVAL will turn the Northern town into ‘LITTLE AMERICA’ – as the music spreads to all corners – including family activities in the Charter Walk shopping centre, American cops, Blues Brothers, parades and plenty of raw live music.
Also lined up for the Burnley Fest are up-and-coming home-grown stars Albany Down. Fresh from recording their debut album produced by Studio legend Greg Haver (Manic Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals, InMe), this slick young 4-piece outfit take their inspiration from the best of British blues-rock tradition – the likes of Free, Zeppelin and the Stones.
